Video format
Talking head
Creator on camera, talking direct to the lens.
The default Reel format. Works because of direct eye contact — feels like a 1-on-1. Most flexible, hardest to nail because nothing carries the video except you.
Most of MKBHD’s short-form.
When to use it
Default to talking head when you — or your take — is the draw. Direct eye contact makes it feel personal, so it’s best for opinions, advice, and building a relationship with your audience.
How to nail it
- Energy matters more than gear — be a little bigger than feels natural.
- Hook hard in the first line; nothing else carries the video.
- Cut every pause and filler word in the edit to keep pace.
Common mistake
Low energy and a slow start. With nothing but you on screen, a flat delivery has nothing to hide behind.
