What is a share on Instagram?

A share is when someone sends your Reel to a friend in a DM or adds it to their story — one of the biggest drivers of reach on Instagram.

On Instagram, a share happens when a viewer taps the paper-plane icon to send your Reel to someone in DMs, or reposts it to their story. It’s the most social action a viewer can take — they’re putting your content in front of their own people.

Shares (especially DM sends) are a heavy reach signal. When people pass a Reel around, Instagram reads it as “worth spreading” and widens distribution. It’s a big reason Reels can jump from a few thousand views to hundreds of thousands.

How to get more shares on Instagram

  • Make it relatable — “tag someone who…” and “send this to…” content gets DM’d.
  • Hit an emotion: funny, surprising or “so true” Reels get passed around.
  • Be genuinely useful so people share it as a favour to a friend.
  • Add a clear prompt: “share this with someone who needs it.”
